BDSM is hot thanks to Fetlife and 50 Shades of Gray.  Free markets are highly efficient to a certain extent.  The rising demand has been met by a huge volume of mediocre material.  This is good as the demands of the newbies are being met too a certain extent. Bored housewifes are writing about rich Doms, who are gruff on the outside but searching for love on the inside.  Frustrated young men are writing about virtuous Doms, and insatiable subs.  There is noting wrong with this.  If newbies are buying and enjoying what they read, then more power to them.  However, an unfortunate side effect is that a lot of truly great material is being lost in this sea of mediocrity.   If you go on Amazon, you will see that there are over 10,000 titles in the BDSM area.  How do know what to buy?

This site to some extent intends to replace the magazines that are no longer published.  They are no longer published as people prefer free material on the Internet to what they might have to pay for.  This is understandable. The offhanded remarks of like-minded individuals have value and should play a role in decisions about what to read.  However, hopefully there is still a perceived value in more thoughtful reviews.  If that is the case, it is hoped that this site will help satisfy the demand.  On these pages there are recommended readings, with lots of discussion.  Hopefully, this will provide significant value-added to simply searching on the Web based store.  If you purchase through this site, you will pay the same price and a small percentage will come back to this site.  Hopefully, everyone involved will be better off: the customer, the reviewer, the author, and even Amazon.

As a start, we have a list of the top 10 fiction books as literature, according to Lance Hermes.  For someone new to BDSM, as something that one might want to take seriously, this list will provide you with the books that you should at least consider reading.  In addition to the great classics of BDSM, there is a modest list of the writings of Lance Hermes. However, there is no pretense that my opinion of my own work is unbiased.

I am not the only local who has tried his hand at writing.  A young lady by the name of Lust Pet from Montreal has a book worth bringing to peoples attention.

BDSM play is primarily psychological in nature.  The quality of the scene is determined by the emotional connection between the bottom and the Top.  Still, technique counts for a lot.  It is also important to be aware of the safety aspects.  Although it may be hard to believe for a beginner, the volume of relevant technical knowledge is actually vast.  A Top can spend many years studying the various techniques and there will be still more to learn.  Rope bondage is something that many may have experimented with as children but it is actually one of the most technically demanding areas in BDSM.  Lance provides his top ten favorites to help people getting started here.
